Photography Conference in Nashville, TN

It matters not the industry, continuing education is extremely vital in any profession.  As Stephen Covey would say, it’s all a part of “Sharpening the Saw®.”  Education keeps any professional up-to-date with new trends, new ideas and new technologies. Most importantly,  education opens up the door to networking opportunities.

This industry has evolved rapidly in the last 5-10 years. Just think of the film-to-digital transition- and one can only imagine the changes we’ve seen. More than ever, photographers are sharing information, and helping each other succeed – the ease of digital photography is making this even easier, because it allows us to give each other instant feedback/constructive criticism.

I am part of several photography groups, and I have to say this group is my favorite: The NO BS Photo Success Forum. This collection of photography pros is one of the best resources in the world of professional photography.  Members of this group worldwide come together in the spirit of collaboration. Everyone openly shares and learns – both in person and online.  The forum provides online trainings on lighting, posing, marketing, Adobe Photoshop®, and almost any topic related to the business of photography. Two of my mentors are the founders of this group; Rob Provencher, of Westmount Photography & James Hodgins of James Hodgins Photography.  These two are business-savvy, brilliant photographers.  They are down-to-Earth people.  Their passion for photography runs deep, and I am honored to continue learning from them on a daily basis.  My NO BS membership has given me access to so much information, and I’ve met many new friends and mentors.

Each year this group has two major conferences; “The Niagra School of Imaging” and “The Inferno.” This month, I attended my first “Inferno” Conference in Nashville. All I can say is…WOW!  I learned how to better help brides schedule their day in and effort to REDUCE STRESS.  We learned how to better optimize the use of backgrounds, textures, and digital frames. I also learned about some of today’s most popular products for the High School Senior, and as a result of this conference – I will be running programs such as, “Dog Day with Santa” (because, like me, so many people are crazy about their pets). I will also be working with High School Marching bands and offering tasteful boudoir photo sessions (for all of you sexy people out there!).

I am committed to honing my craft and keeping abreast of the latest trends and innovations in photography.  This benefits my clients, and keeps me loving my profession.

Below are a few shots from the fun night shoots of “The Inferno” in Nashville, TN.  Each nigh of the conference, I ventured out on night shoots with fellow photographers. What a beautiful and “photogenic” city! We were so anamored, that we stayed out until the wee hours -shooting our butts off!  Enjoy!

High School Senior Portrait Session

Senior Portraits are so much fun.  I love the creativity that a High School Senior brings to the photography session.  We shot these at Hudson Gardens in Littleton, Colorado.  It’s a great place for photographers.  I will be shooting a wedding there in a couple of weeks.  In the mean time.  Enjoy, and if you know anyone looking for High School Senior Portaits in the Littleton (subburb of Denver), Colorado.  Please let me know. More to come soon, as I have a few other ambassadors from other local schools. If you know a HS Senior who would make a great ambassador for Paul Maynard Photography in the South Denver Metro Area, let me know!

It’s in the Details…right?

Are the details important on your wedding day?  As a wedding photographer, I believe the wedding details are very important.  When you look at your wedding album, and see all those little details.  They bring back many memories of your special day.  Don’t you agree?

Here are some details from past weddings I’ve had the pleasure to be a part of.  Tell me what you think.

Destination Wedding…Kent Island, Maryland!

I had the opportunity to shoot a destination wedding on Kent Island, Maryland at Hemimgways.  This was a Summer wedding on a beautiful June afternoon.  The location of the wedding was at Hemingway’s.  Which is located on the east side of the Bay Bridge in Maryland.  It sits on the water, and a great place for a destination wedding.

Our day started off rainy.  As a Wedding Photographer, I started to think of all the alternate shots I would have to take.  I called everyone I knew to bring their umbrellas.  I had some creative ideas with the umbrellas if we had to use them.  Then the weather gods graced us with the hot sun, and blue skies.  Not to mention a little humidity.  As a Colorado Wedding Photographer.  I was not used to the humidity, but it was well worth the wait (see the last photo below).  What a perfect Summer setting for a June Wedding.

Gene, and Rebecca are great people.  They have big hearts, and are surrounded by amazing people.  I was so honored to be their wedding photographer for their wedding day.  We all had a lot of fun, and captured many great moments as the day unfolded.

I will let the pictures tell the story.  Enjoy!

The end to a Perfect Wedding Day

Spring Time in the Rocky Mountains

The great thing about Colorado (littleton subburb of Denver) is how it can snow one day, and be clear the next day.  This is a great place to do outdoor portrait sessions.  This would be a great place to have a Colorado Wedding…hint, hint, hint.

The beauty of Colorado never amazes me.  Blue skies, flowers blooming, and snow.  I’ve lived in many places in Colorado.  Such as; Breckenridge, Silverthorne, Dillon, Frisco, Salida, and Littleton (subburb of Denver).  Every place has amazing photography oppotunities.  I love what I do, and sharing it with others.

Stock Photography…what is it?

Where’s the milk?

Don’t you just love Chocolate Chip Cookies?  I am a Wedding, and Portrait Photographer in Littleton, Colorado.  I was enjoying these cookies so much that I wanted to have some fun with them in my studio.  Which brings me to today’s subject…Stock Photography.

20090314 img 2441 Stock Photography...what is it?

When I am not shooting  a Wedding or Portrait session.  I shoot stock.  What is stock?  Stock photography is everything you see.  Marketers, Advertisers, and Designers use Stock Photography for any type of materials they need.  It’s a affordable way for companies to use images, video, illustrations, and audio for their marketing.  Whether it is a large company of thousands, or just a Bride that needs a photo for a wedding invitation.  That’s the beauty of it.

I have recently put a profile together on iStock.  It’s a way to generate income with images that would otherwise sit on my hard drive.

Swim at Risk Sign

A couple of years ago we were traveling on the east coast.  I saw this sign, and thought it was pretty cool.  At the time I didn’t think it would be a stock shot.  I uploaded it to iStock, and they accepted it.

Stock photography is a way to generate residual income.  It’s a way to travel the world, and do what I love…Photography.

On location Maternity Shoot

Eric, and Kimberly are expecting their first child in a week or two.  I had the pleasure of photographing a maternity session at their home.  We figured it would be easier on Kimberly in her home.  I brought my studio with me, and scouted out a location with enough room for the studio lights.  We found a spot in the finished basement that would give us the room to set up.   Here is what the location looked like:

img 2089 On location Maternity Shoot

Finished Basement Maternity Location

As you can see I had a few things I would have to work out in my post Photoshop work.  I am not one of those photographers that always says, “I’ll fix it in Photoshop”.  But, in this situation.  I didn’t have a choice.

The red wall looked really sharp, and wanted to stay with the same color scheme.  Here is what I came up with:

This next image is my favorite.  It really shows Eric’s love for his Son.  As a Father myself.  I really love it when a moment like this happens, and how people open themselves up to me.  These kind of moments are special, and keeps people grounded to what’s really important.

I am so greatful to be a part Eric, and Kimberly’s life.  I am excited for their new journey into parenthood.

Ken Caryl Colorado Sunrise

This morning I had to bring my son to hockey practice at 6:40 a.m.  He is 16 and will have his drivers license soon.  I am thankful that he will be able to drive himself to practice.  On the other hand, I have the opportunity to enjoy the incredible Colorado sunrise’s.

Last night we received about one inch of snow and it was really cold this morning.  Next to The Edge Ice Arena, part of Foothills Recreation Center,  is the Meadows Golf Club.  There are a set of trees in a little pond.  This morning with the cold temperature.  Steam was rising from the pond with birds flying all around.  Then the sun started to rise.  Wow, I love mornings like this!

Here is a photo of what I wanted to share with you today.  The image below that is the same image in Photo Art.  Which would look great in your home or office icon smile Ken Caryl Colorado Sunrise

I would really love your comments, and opinions.  Have a great day!

Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) Crawfish Boil

p2098523 Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) Crawfish Boil
Mardi Gras Crawfish Boil

You don’t need to travel to New Orleans, Louisiana to celebrate Mardi Gras.  “Mardi Gras” (literally “Fat Tuesday”), the term has come to mean the whole period of activity related to those events.

Have you ever been to a Crawfish Boil?   My first Crawfish Boil was in a backyard in Breckenridge, Colorado.  This was my first experience to Crawfish, and now love Cajun food.

I host a Crawfish Boil every year around Mardi Gras, and all of our friends look forward to this fun event.  If you are looking for a get together with friends.  This is the way to do it.  You can either buy the crawfish (frozen) at the grocery store or you can also order crawfish live.

However, you do need to have the big crawfish pot.  My crawfish pot is so big that I have to keep it in the lawnmower shed.  I usually just put it on my stove top, and it takes up all 4 burners.  One of these days I will buy the outdoor burner.  This will make it easier to cook the crawfish.  One thing that I like about cooking the crawfish inside is the wonderful crawfish smell.  When you walk into my house.  You can smell and feel the spice when you breath.

I also make Gumbo, Jumbalaya, Red Beans & Rice, and Bread Pudding.  You can find all the receips on-line.

Do something different this year.  Invite all your friends, neighbors, and family.  You will have a lot of fun and enjoy some good food.

“Laissez les bons temps rouler!”  Is French for “Let the good times roll”.  You will hear this a lot during Mardi Gras.  So, get your beads, your cajun music, and cold beer.  Have fun, and don’t forget to take some photographs.
